On a darker note:

. Fence to Keep Sexual Predator 500 Feet Away From Public

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) — District of Columbia officials confirmed on Tuesday that they are constructing a fence around a federal government building to keep a sexual predator 500 feet away from the public.

With a Monday deadline for completion of the barrier fast approaching, the calls to “build the wall” have only grown louder.

“Once we got official word last week that the felon in question would not be going to prison, we immediately got to work on the fence,” D.C. spokesman Harland Dorrinson said. “We’re doing everything we can to keep people safe.”

D.C. residents praised the decision to build the fence, but warned that one is still needed around the Supreme Court.

Jennifer Rubin, who just quit The Washington Post, has launched The Contrarian together with Norman Eisen. Jen Rubin has a telling summary of our current president’s tenure: "It was the best of Biden; it was the worst of Biden". Perhaps no great surprises but it’s definitely worth a read – and both Biden’s best and his worst will define the time ahead.

Gentner Drummond May be against private schools getting public funds (good!) but he’s also in favor of a renewables moratorium (bad!) unlike Governor Kevin Stitt

This "idea" shows really and truly how anti-free market the modern GOP is.

Expand full comment

Yeah. Mafia-esque mercantilism. To his credit, Stitt himself states that his tacit support for renewables is on “let the market decide” grounds, along with OK’s ample wind resources (like 50% of the state’s juice comes from wind now)

Not sure that's fair, he's not exactly in the pocket of O&G (see link), either, and despite the benefits of green power, there's no question energy developers tend to be lawless bad actors, whether they are gas or wind developers. https://nondoc.com/2024/04/10/drummond-files-two-winter-storm-uri-price-manipulation-lawsuits/

Hmmm. Fair enough. I’m basing this on an article I saw on Reddit the other day that suggested otherwise in terms of shutting down new wind and solar capacity, which would be dumb (especially with how many people the wind industry employs in OK)

Though that argument can be made against pretty much any industry. For instance, some years ago, a local pizza chain closed down after it came to light that they'd been engaged in truly massive wage theft and exploitation of immigrant workers. No one argued for a moratorium on new pizza restaurants.

Knee jerk bans are rarely good policy, though there are some circumstances where a hard pause is a reasonable partial response to an out of control process having outstripped its regulatory bounds. I think I remember the Obama Interior doing that with renewable permitting on federal lands, for instance.

In an insult to the memory of President Jimmy Carter and to the nonpartisan American tradition of honoring deceased presidents, Governor Greg Abbott has decreed that flags in the state of Texas be flown at full-staff. This is the same governor who signed a law requiring professional sports teams to play the national anthem before every home game. What a patriotic American.

This is one of many reasons why Texan mothers detest the governor.

A reminder of contrary to their words, very few right wingers are actually "anti government." They want the federal government - and government at all layers - to do things. THEIR things.

I have no idea what it will take for "things to line up right" in FL by now, referring to Moskowitz running for governor. I'm also not wild about his overtures to the other side, including the roughly day long flirtation with joining the Trump administration, but I can understand that to a degree given his district's increasing competitiveness.

At least we don't have to defend an open FL-23 in a special election, and if the gubernatorial race actually does look competitive for Dems then they should hold it easily even if open.

TX State House - Speaker's Race

Today was the first day of the Texas Legislative Session and a new Speaker was elected in a bit of a surprise. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) defeated David Cook (R-Mansfield) 85 votes to 55.

The battle became a proxy war between the moderate to right faction and far-right/MAGA faction. The Republican House caucus had endorsed David Cook and among other things he had promised to do away with appointing members of opposing parties to committee chairmanships. Burrows was elected with the support of 49 Democrats and 36 Republicans.

Even after the vote infighting among Republicans is continuing with the state chair saying Burrows supporters could be censured and barred from running in the next primary elections.
