So yeah, Substack needs to do a lot better with these comments. Inserting tweets or images into comments is an incredibly basic feature that they really need to enable.

One of the things I miss about the DKE Live Threads.

Threads and/or Bluesky embedding should also be made available.

Given that 90% of the time tweets didn’t render on my Android mobile devices and given how much I hate Twitter and Musk, all I can say is good riddance.

The other thing is you can delete your comments here, which is already like an incredibly basic and important feature that Daily Kos has always resisted implementing.

Super disappointed in no live digest and also that this seems to be way less sophisticated than the old site. Why did they discontinue a live feed?

The "Live" Digest honestly hadn't been live for a while - the time at which they started posting news in it just kept getting pushed back. And of course it's extremely early, but thus far most of the conversation seems to be taking place in the Discord channel (possibly due to the limitations in commenting here that I mentioned above).

I really don't like Discord for this kind of thing, because it's not threaded like these comments are. (In fairness, I don't really like Discord at all, but that's neither here nor there.) I'm 100% sure I'm going to wind up missing things I'd have seen on DKE as a result.

Ya, a Discord channel with more than a handful of contributors is not a place for simultaneous topics. While Substack seems to be missing pretty basic comment features, I think I'll be using this as the place for more serious conversations.

Same for me. I get the use of discord because it's a good monetizable perk, which is perfectly reasonable. It doesn't fit how I want to participate though.

Hopefully it all works out!

Yeah, it just became impossible to meet our own standards of quality and thoroughness in the "liveblog" format of the Live Digest. If we treated it like Twitter, then sure, we could've posted all day long every day. But that wasn't the goal, and ultimately, it became a hub for the community. The Morning Digest can serve the exact same purpose, especially since it won't be appearing on the "front page" any place else!

As for comment traffic, we haven't even truly launched here yet! Our first newsletter will go out via Substack on Monday, and we'll be shutting things down over at DKE. So right now, things are a little bifurcated, but I expect that to change once the switchover is complete. I just ask everyone to keep an open mind!

Discord channels are crazy messes when they have more than about two dozen active users.

Menendez completely out now.

That was my peeve about DKE. Could people actually like copy past actual content and attribute the author instead of constantly trying to insert links to Musk’s shitty site? Am I the only one who doesn’t use the shitty site and certainly doesn’t rely on it to get news? I still prefer to link back to actual news articles and write up the core points, but even on DKE, it’s been more like a twitter feed than an actual comment section at times.

I hope these comment threads can take the place of the DKE comment threads. Those were always good to look at just to see the news of the day. Posting seems straightforward enough.

What is the discord link?

You should have received it in your "welcome" email from Substack, but in case not, this is it: https://sidestack.io/the-downballot

Note that you need to be a paying subscriber to access the server, and you have to use the same email address that you used to sign up for Substack. The Discord is a ton of fun so far—I highly recommend you check it out!

I have no idea what the discord looks like, but it sadly seems most of the regulars will go there to post any election news and not the comments section here, which basically splits the former DKE community into the haves and the have nots.

The amount of comments so far isn’t anywhere close to the volume of the 200+ we’d get on DK every day. Maybe that changes and people become more active, but my suspicion has always been with having another place other than here for most DK’ers to migrate to, that’s exactly what they’ll do.

I understand the need to have more control and your own space and supported the move, but this sub stack website is extremely not user friendly and links, quotes and tweets no longer show up along with the easy to use customizable options with text or pictures. Other than the delete or edit function I’m honestly having a hard time seeing exactly how this is an upgrade from DK regardless of what we’re being told.

I really don’t even feel like posting despite how active I was on the old site. Text comments only doesn’t have the same visual impact DK allowed posts to have and something I’m 100% positive had an impact on why there were so many lurkers or commenters in the first place. If DKE only had text comments like these, it would look exactly as active as this site is now.

Hopefully all these concerns are resolved or work themselves out in the end as I do wish for the moderators and this site to be successful, but for me, the comments are what kept me coming back over and over throughout the day because there was always something new to read about. I only read the digest data once, I read the comments dozens of times.

Number 1 priority of mods should be to allow embeds in comments. That will probably help boost activity here. My 2 cents anyways.
